My final major project at university was to create props for my chosen characters; Tonks and Mad eye Moody from the Harry Potter series.
This is my last and most important prop of this project. The moving eye for mad eye moody, I initially wanted to use animatronics then realised that they’re not only super hard but super expensive so I gave up on that idea.. I spent all summer thinking up wacky ways of making an eye move yet still be able to sit inside a prosthetic on someone’s face. Then I remembered the scene in order of the phoenix where Mad eye takes out his eye and washes it. So yes, maybe it’s cheating, but I made the moving eye for this scene, it made things a LOT easier for myself but making the thing work was still pretty difficult. It took me a while to paint the iris but I’m super proud of it.
As you can see in the last photo the mechanism is simple, a motor, a switch and a battery pack… there is a weight attached to the battery pack to give the eye a more erratic movement instead of just going round and round. This mechanism turns the painted eye whilst the clear outer ball is still so the prop can be held and still appear to be whizzing about.
